JK Rowling gave us, in her Harry Potter sagas, not just hours of entertainment, but some pearls of wisdom as well. To do with relationships, her insights include:
“We can’t choose our fate, but we can choose others. Be careful in knowing that.” – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
We can’t stop life from throwing lemons at us, but we can choose who makes lemonade with us. Pick your partners carefully, find your Hermione!

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
A little tough love never killed anybody! Don’t be afraid to right your partner’s wrongs. When they get off track, confront them and remind them that they were meant for Dumbledore’s Order, not Voldemort’s Death Eaters.
“There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.” – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Sharing experiences brings a certain kind of intimacy in relationships, and perhaps adversities, rather than pleasant memories, strengthen the bond between a couple. So remember that destroying Horcruxes with your partner is just as important as attending the Yule Ball!
“Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
It is crucial to let your partner know of things/people that bother you, even if the conversation will be unpleasant, instead of adopting a withdrawn approach, as this will only increase any communication gaps.
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Always remember that even in the worst of times and worst of fights, there is some beauty and happiness. All you have to do is channel it! For let’s not forget, Ron and Hermione shared their first kiss in the chamber of secrets with the Basilisk.
“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” – Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The things one looks for in their partner varies from person to person, but compassion and respectful behavior can take both a person and a relationship a long way. There is perhaps no better way to exemplify this other than Harry and Dobby’s relationship.
And always remember: “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
