Arranged marriages are not the marriage between two people or two families. It is the relationship between the grooms job and affordability of brides family. What do you say?

Let's not forget what is expected of the bride. Tall , fair, slim – just what a casual reading of the matrimonial page will show you *p*

Good point! Yeah this is also a great deciding factor.*p*

At times I feel that the arranged marriages are a relationship between two horoscopes. Having done with the economic status and prospective future of the couple what is left is the Panditji who matches the horoscopes. Well if you do not consult the Panditji someone at least including the bride to be and groom to be shall definitely consult and match on astro sites. Lo kar lo baat.*p*

It is really annoying to see when even so called educated family, qualified bride and grooms too support dowry with a new name 'gift'.*p*

I don't get your point. *p*

And we expect our society to change? Stable job doesn't mean a stable life. Do you think that any loving father will ever marry off his daughter to a man if he knows that he will become an abusive husband? No matter whatever stable or high profile job he holds, will he? Do you really think that a real man who has self-respect will ever except or beg for financial assistance or dowry from brides parents. Yes the society will never change when the generation next too support the stale mentality exixting since centuries. Why to wait for few generation? Why not you be the change?   *p*

Thanks Saumya*p**p*Nice thought provoking article. Yeah nothing has changed much in Indian marriage system. It's really sad!*p*

Thanks for raising the question, Leena!*p**p*Here are some of my observations published a couple of months back-*p**p*This is how the Indian marriage market works*p*

Why would a bride's father arrange someone for his daughter who isn't financially stable enough for her? Obviously, when you're marrying your daughter off to someone then you always make sure that the person has a stable job and stable life. And in taking caring of the daughter the guy wants the bride to be rich enough to get him whatever he couldn't afford with his job. That's how Indian society is structured to work and materialize the idea of marriage. And that's how it'll be until the next few generations bring some social changes. *p*

Should also factor in the bride's physical appearance and presentability. It works more like a marketplace where traditional gender roles are sought. So the man needs to show his bank balance, while the woman nee/ds to show her ability to beget healthy, good looking children. Is this how it should be? Probably not.*p*

Job is there in love marriage. No girl wants to marry a jobless guy.  Affordability is about expenses involved or dowry in marriage. In love marriage, brides take more from their families these days. Both arranged and love marriage are costly affairs. Even when they elope, they come back to take their share and hold functions. *p*

Hi Ranjana*p**p*It is blunt but true. In our society 'achcha ladka' means a boy with good job and 'achchi ladki' doesn't mean a well educated working girl. Though change is on the way…still a long way to go.*p*

Ranjana Kamo July 13, 2017 - 10:22 am

That would be a blunt but true way of putting it, though I am sure nobody would like our thoughts . The underlying reasons are these though people may call it anything . *p*
