Ganesh Chaturthi and the docile bride

Why this Chaturthi an Indian wife still holds fast from sun rise to moon rise and only breaks it after the husband feeds her. Does the husband keep a fast too? Or such actions on a wife’s part is an example of her dedication towards her Pati. It’s quite amazing that the Indian wife has to prove over and over again that she is dedicated to her husband through various rituals that were made keeping in mind a patriarchal society.

  1. I’m maharashtrian and i never knew that women were supposed to fast today. Never observed either my mother or mother in law fast today.
Many women actually believe that fasting will increasing their husbands life span. Its a social event. Its just part of our culture.
If you do not hold such a belief and fasting upsets your stomach then i dont see why you should do it just to keep up with tradition.
For most women its just fun and filmy.
But yes, if you are forced to do something just to please your family you should think what exactly is your status in that family.

  2. Once i was fasting mondays and tuesday was karva chauth, my hubby fasted both days with me! And now we don’t fast at all 🙂

  3. Customs! i didnt like it when my wife had to fast on karvara chauth. They do it because, customs are there, and everyone follows, right or wrong. It made no sense to me other than a sort of ‘sacrifice” – i skip a meal, have some hardship and therefore, Nature will be pleased to give my husband no hardships, or a long life. Hmm. But when my wife started getting migraines, is when i quit the’ run up the stairs to see if the moon is out” routine , put my foot solidly down, and told her not to fast, but have a coffee etc through the day.Ganesh Chaturthi , fast? i didnt even know, am not going to begin now. Ganpati Bappa Morya !

  4. I guess this all depends from person to person, an acquaintance of mine keeps fast whenever his wife does and breaks it only with his wife. I know quite a few people who won’t even have something to eat outside if they are alone as they want to share that with their wife only.

Fasting, apart from its spiritual benefits, is a blessing to one’s system as well. A change in the food intake and rest during fasting is good for the digestive system. A break for the digestive system only aids in functioning of it more efficiently – Source : Google.

We cannot change the whole world or whole India at a time and neither will it ever happen but if we ourselves change and try to bring changes around us on micro level, definitely it will bring more happiness.
