Money and marriage

The latest buzz- financial independence of women is the cause of increasing divorce rate. Do you guys agree?I feel that though money plays a big role in any relation but if love and respect is in place, it can survive any storm.

You are absolutely right. basis of any marriage is trust and respect and cause of divorce continues to be lack of love, respect and trust. But not being financially independent is the reason many women continue to remain in abusive marriage. And financial independence gives them the strength to move out such marriages.

Loaded question I am afraid. Let me try and unpack it.*p*Financial independence causes increases divorces –> Yes.*p*Is that a bad thing –> not in all cases.*p*Because without that independence women would have had to bear through bad marriages. Now they don’t have to. *p**p*Now, does financial independence caused attitudinal changes that have caused increase in divorce?*p*I would say it has.*p*Every marriage is very much about dependence on each other. A valorization of independence gets in the way of that. I would say the young today are less patient with each other.*p**p*Whereas earlier divorce was about escaping abusive marriages, now the bar is lowered to ‘why should I adjust for another human being when I am a complete person myself’.*p**p*So, what do we do?*p*Definitely assert on ensuring financial independence. That gives the confidence to make life decisions. At the same time inculcate a sense of balance: we are all here to depend on each other. To be with people we want to can give to and receive from. Let us not lose sight of that in the quest for financial independence. *p**p*We don’t have to endure abuse. But we are not entitled to perfection.

That is the most ridiculous statement I’ve heard! Financial independence has given women the courage to stand up for themselves. The cause of divorce continues to be incompatibility/ irreparable breakdown of marriage/ spousal abuse of all kinds/ infidelity etc.

Do not agree with that. Compromise should be from both sides. No doubt Love and respect can survive any storm
