Why are ‘single’ versus ‘in a relationship’ discussions often skewed?

Why are 'single' versus 'in a relationship' discussions, more often than not, skewed by what one wants to believe? Why is the best of single life pitted against the worst of couple life and vice versa? If at all a comparison has to be made, shouldn't it be amongst either the worst of 'single' and 'committed' life or between the best elements of 'single' and 'committed' life?

  1. Of course, discussions are based on one's beliefs which tend to make them a bit biased. To remain single or to be in a relationship is a matter of personal choice. Yes, sometimes societal pressures and family values tend to make one a little secretive. However, as the Indian society begins to get more permissive, these discussions will automatically subside.*p*

  2. Oh! that's fabulously expressed! Cannot agree more, 'happy are the ones who are above all these comparisons'… and it is just wrong to compare things that are so fundamentally different.*p*

  3. This is a good issue. People often tend to look at the black cloud than the silver lining. Which makes us compare the sad aspect of a single guy’s life with the happy aspect of a person who is in a relationship. And this a very biased comparison and often leads to a result which just makes the single person sad and dejected.*p**p*We shouldn’t compare something which is fundamentally different. There are happy bachelors and committed people who are not satisfied with their partners. And happy are the ones who are above all these comparisons.

  4. Being 'single' or 'in a relationship' are individual preferences and you cannot compare the two. There are pros and cons in every status and what makes a difference is how comfortable is the person in her/ his status. You cannot expect a giraffe to have stripes and a zebra to be tall, they are brilliant as they are. One can talk about what makes one's status special for her/him but there is no need for a comparison. *p*

  5. You are so right! One faction is always trying to pull the other till they somehow find themselves there 🙂 The thing is India is a difficult place for singles, eso if you are not in a metro. Also married people look at singles as if they have some flaw because of which they are still single! *p**p*Nor has any research been done on single living and other forms of companionship. Good discussion starter! *p*

  6. Coz people don't understand the value of relationships these days so prefer to be single but want all perks of being in a relationship.  *p**p* *p**p*Well once they understand values of any relationship.  Be it friend . Wife . Sister. Brother.  Siblings. Colleagues life will be simpler and beautiful. *p*
