Rani Mukerji is happily married to Aditya Chopra today. But her happy ending came trampling over another person’s sad ending. We are here talking about Aditya Chopra’s first wife, Payal Khanna.
Payal and Aditya were school friends. Their parents were friends too. They got married in 2001. But their marriage did not click and they got divorced in 2009. According to the gossip mill, any or both of these reasons were responsible for their divorce.
- The presence of a certain Ms. Mukerji in Aditya’s life
- Aditya and Payal were too good friends to be in love or to be soul-mates
Isn’t friendship important in love?
All relationship experts and people in successful relationships always stress friendship as the most important building block of a successful relationship. And here the gossip mill is telling us friendship became a hindrance in love!
This idea may seem really odd, but in her 2006 film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna Rani Mukerji has actually said these lines:
Kabhi kabhi dosti mohabbat ki jagah le leti hai
Aur phir mohabbat ke liye jagah hi nahin rahti
(At times friendship replaces love, and there’s no space left for love)
Based on the topic of extramarital affairs, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna did not do well commercially, mostly because the couple engaged in the extramarital affair could not garner as much sympathy as their spouses.

The characters Dev and Maya are both married to their best friends. Their spouses respectively, Rhea and Rishi are gorgeous looking, with cool attitude and are deeply in love with their spouses. And as a bonus both have lucrative careers.
Money, looks, friendship and love; aren’t these more than enough to look for in an ideal partner? Surprisingly, these are not enough for Dev and Maya. Both are miserable in their marital lives and make their partners’ lives miserable.
Dev was a football player whose career came abruptly to an end because of an accident. This makes him bitter and his wife Rhea becomes the target of all his bitterness. He has no tenderness for his wife. He’s jealous of her success and happiness. He always takes her words negatively and his only way of communicating with her is rude sarcasm.
I’ll marry you but still keep looking
Maya, after becoming an orphan at a young age, is taken care of by Rishi’s father. Thus Rishi and Maya became childhood friends. Rishi is in love with Maya, but Maya is still looking for her true love. Yet meanwhile she gets married to Rishi. Like Dev, she too makes her partner’s life miserable. She makes it quite obvious she is not in love with Rishi. She is never keen on any kind of physical relationship with her husband. Each loving gesture of her husband is met with contempt from her.
No wonder Maya and Dev never got any sympathy from the viewers. It felt like – they really DESERVED each other because their partners obviously deserved better.
However, the moment Dev and Maya are with each other they become entirely different persons. They are tender, loving, touch-y and happy together.
Who knows what is love
Maybe that’s clicking or being in love. One just doesn’t know how and with whom you get the feeling of belonging.
The film, made by Rani and Aditya’s best friend, Karan Johar, feels somehow close to their own love life.
Dev’s mother tries a lot for Dev to find happiness with Rhea, but she is unsuccessful. Likewise in real life, Aditya’s parents tried a lot for him to stay happy with his first wife but they also failed. Aditya wanted to be with only Rani, just like Dev only wanted to be with Maya.
Finally Dev and Maya get their way and their ex-partners move on. In real life Aditya and Rani are together and Aditya’s ex Payal has moved on and is successfully running her interior design firm, Aura Dezyne.
