We had a love marriage and everything seemed rosy

My name is Vidya. I met Sameer through a common friend. I was doing my Masters in Bangalore and he was based in Delhi for work. After my final year exams, I went to Delhi and joined him, so that we could spend some time together and get to know each other. I still remember the day I landed in Delhi, I saw Sameer with a rose in his hands. He proposed to me right there in our very first meeting. We used to hang out and go for parties together. We used to do everything together. Just after Diwali, we got married.

The wedding was expensive for my father, but there was no dowry. We just had a grand wedding, and then a fun-filled trip to the Maldives. After we came back from our honeymoon, we both got busy in our work. I took up a job as well. Sameer and I had a financial arrangement that we would not ask for money from each other. We took care of household expenses together.

Almost a year later, Sameer suddenly had extra work. He began to spend more time in the office or on his computer and phone. He stopped talking to me. Our conversations became minimum. I started to feel odd. I did not doubt him, because he would either be in the office or at home. He would work till late at night. I would be sleeping.

I got suspicious and decided to check on him

After watching him for a few months, it started to bother me. In March when I got a notice from Sameer’s bank for non-payment of credit card bills, I checked with the bank. I found out that he had been buying a lot of credits on a website and a huge e-shopping list. I now connected the dots.

Sameer and I would drink milk at night together. He would get me milk and after drinking I would sleep. He was sedating me every single night. I then decided that I would watch what Sameer did in the night. He got me milk, but I did not drink and pretended to sleep. After a while, I woke up to see Sameer chatting with a camgirl.

He was involved with a camgirl

Her name was Jenna. She was a European girl living in the Philippines. I now understood what was happening. I confronted Sameer right there. Sameer said he only browses the cam site. He has no relationship. After about a week, Sameer was fired from his job. He had collected advance payment from a client on behalf of the company. It was partly cash and he used it all.

Sameer had also made a few trips to the Philippines and there too he had spent a lot. But now I tried to keep him here. He had already used up his savings and out of work. I made sure that Sameer would not spend any money now. After a huge duel, Sameer told me that he has given up on Jenna and he wanted to start a business. So I started helping him. He drained my money as well. Then he started demanding more money. When I told him I had no money left, he asked me to get it from my father. He began beating me and we would fight every day. He did set up a startup, but that was just to show me.

I decided to finish with him

One day, he said, “If you don’t get money, you are of no use.” I was tempted to go to the cops to teach him a lesson, but that would just worsen the situation. He would be locked up for a few days and then released on bail. It would just come back to me. He had already used all the money and jewellery we had saved. He also took a hefty chunk of money from my father. I now had nothing to lose. I told him, “Let’s settle this for good. You go ahead with your camgirl and I will leave you both. I have prepared the divorce papers already. Call Jenna here.”

Jenna had really become wealthy by now. I told Sameer that I wanted the house as alimony and he agreed. Then Jenna was somehow brought over. I’d arranged a lawyer with marriage and divorce papers, but we didn’t tell her that. I told Jenna that I had signed the divorce papers, now she had to sign the marriage papers.

When I asked Jenna to marry Sameer, she refused. I asked her why she was draining Sameer’s wealth. Jenna said that it was Sameer who was unable to afford her. He gave gifts every time and how could she refuse? Sameer then stood up for himself and told Jenna that it was she who was troubling him with all sorts of demands. Jenna retorted, “This what I do for a living. When did we plan on getting married?” Sameer was shocked and couldn’t believe his ears. He tried to ask me for forgiveness, but I threw down the divorce papers and left.
