Sania Mirza: The mother-to-be with a mind of her own!

Sania Mirza answers the question: So when are you going to settle down?

The nation and their neighbour aunties sighed in relief when yesterday Sania tweeted a picture suggesting she is pregnant. Later the news was confirmed by her father. Sania will be a mother in October this year.

Sania is the most successful female tennis player of India. But India being India, in spite of winning many prestigious Grand Slam tournaments as a doubles player, the press never stopped asking her about when she would become a mother.

Even senior and respectable media person Rajdeep Sardesai too asked her once in an interview about when she would settle down.

Sania, since the beginning of her career, has been known to be a no-nonsense girl with a mind of her own. Without getting swayed by society, she has always made her own decisions, be it wearing short skirts going against few clerics or falling in love with a Pakistani cricketer going against many Indians.

Always a fitting response

Naturally, she always had a ready and fitting reply whenever she was asked about her “becoming a mother”. To Rajdeep Sardesai she had replied, “You sound disappointed that I’m not choosing motherhood over being number one in the world at this point of time. But I’ll answer your question anyway, that’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that all women have to face – the first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately, that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we don’t become settled. But eventually, it will happen, not right now. And when it does happen I’ll be the first one to tell everybody when I plan to do that.”

She’s feminist enough to know that the settling down of a woman should not be tied to having a child. She knew she would be a mother some day, but that would be her own decision, taken by her independently, not under society’s coercion.

Social pressure at every stage

Often, pressures from society and family make marriage, having children and even career a burden instead of being pleasant landmarks of life. Sania inspires us to throw pressure from society far far away from our mind and then take our own time to excel in career, enjoy life with husband and then have a child when one is ready for the responsibility.

After achieving the zenith in her career, since last year she has been taking it slow. After an injury last October she is out of action. She has just crossed 30 and has a stable marriage of 8 years now. She must have thought everything is coming together nicely to have a baby. And she went for it, and like always, surprised everyone with her decision.

Never letting social pressure get to her

As promised, she declared to the world about it with a cute tweet.

On one side when she was hounded for not becoming a mother as soon as she got married, on the other side a group of Indians were mad at her for getting married to Shoaib Malik, a cricketer from Pakistan. She was accused of many things, including being anti-Indian. But she continued to be a citizen of India and continued playing for India, bringing her many moments of glory. She has set up her home in Dubai with her husband.

Baby Mirza-Malik is going to be a symbol of Sania’s determination and beliefs. The baby is an angel of peace as the offspring of Indian and Pakistani sportspersons. Each time the sports fans from arch nemeses India and Pakistan become violent over a match, the baby will make them feel “it is just a game”.
