His wife Hazel Keech is his support system
Hazel and Yuvraj have been married since 2016, and she has been his strongest support system ever since.
Yuvraj’s has seen a number of highs and lows in his life. In 2011, news came out that Yuvraj was diagnosed with a condition called extragonadal seminoma, with the tumour located between his lungs. The tumour had been identified at an early stage and doctors clarified that it had not spread into the lungs.
Yuvraj underwent chemotherapy in Boston and Indianapolis, and he took a sabbatical from the game till he fully recovered. He came back to the field after treatment.
How Yuvraj fell for Hazel
The two first met at a friend’s party in 2011. Yuvraj said in an interview that he was enamoured by Hazel’s smile but she didn’t look interested in him at all. He even complimented her work in the Salman Khan starrer Bodyguard. Hazel shot down all his efforts of asking her out for coffee. He asked her 7-8 times but she always said no.
2011 was also the year when Yuvraj was diagnosed with cancer and pursuing an uninterested girl took a backseat. He then went to the USA for chemotherapy and treatment.
Destiny brought Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech together
In 2014, three years after they had first met, Yuvraj saw Hazel in Angad Bedi’s friend’s list. He asked Angad to stay away from Hazel because he really liked her. Hazel accepted his friend request 3 months later. He finally mustered up the courage to ask her out on a date, to which she agreed. Yuvraj did his research about Hazel’s work profile before heading out to the date. He found out about her role in The Harry Potter films and a musical Bombay Dreams.
They dated for a year, and in 2015, Yuvraj proposed to Hazel in Bali, where they were vacationing. “I really don’t think I am good at romance, so I was understandably nervous,” he confessed. She said yes this time.
Hazel gets along with mom-in-law well
Rumour has it that Yuvraj is momma’s boy. Apparently, when he was dating Deepika Padukone for some time, his mom didn’t approve of her so they broke up.
Then Yuvraj’s family got embroiled in a controversy when his brother Zorawar’s ex-wife Akanksha Sharma, a contestant on Bigg Boss 10, alleged that Yuvraj’s mother Shabnam Singh is the reason why her marriage to Zorawar didn’t work out. The family dismissed all her claims and Shabnam Singh now has a wonderful relationship with daughter-in-law Hazel Keech.
In a witty post earlier this year, after Hazel went through nose surgery, she wrote: “Lucky enough for me, it annoyed my mother-in-law so much that she finally took me to a hospital, because of which we came to know just how much internal damage there was and understood the problem. So thanks to her I have a new nose (internally) and for the first time in my life, I can now breathe freely and easily.”
What do they love about each other?
Yuvraj says, “Unlike most people who show interest in my life only because they are driven by some agenda, Hazel is a genuine, honest person, who knows the real me. The fact that she takes no interest in my on-field life is refreshing. She shares my attitude towards life. Both of us love goofing around and we believe in working hard. Life is interesting when you have such a partner.”
Hazel on her part kept it simple, “I’m so thankful to have found such an amazing person.”
In another interview, she said that she had no clue about how it felt to be a cricketer and what it meant to play for India. She realised that for the first time when she saw Yuvraj crying after he was called back to the Indian team in 2014.
“When he was selected to play for India and this was before we got married, and his suitcase and kit arrived, he was crying. I obviously don’t understand what that feels like, and I don’t think anyone does except the players who played for India, those were picked and dropped. I just remember him saying, ‘Never did I imagine that I will play for India again’,” said Hazel.
Yuvraj Singh has been previously linked to a number of Bollywood actresses which include Minissha Lamba, Kim Sharma and Preity Zinta, but all of this has never affected her. She feels there are consistency and trust in her relationship with Yuvraj Singh.
Hazel and her struggles with depression
Hazel opened up about her battle with depression, bulimia and the pressure to fit in. She spoke about her struggles on Social Media when the 10-year challenge was trending. She is now much more comfortable in her own skin and loves the way she is she says.
How life will be now
Hazel told the media that she was happy that they would be able to spend time together now. “It’ll be nice but it’ll also be different. From the time that we’ve been together, he was playing and even I was working. So our normal is very different from other peoples’ normal so now it’ll be different than he’s around.”
We wish Yuvraj and Hazel the best in their life! Here’s to them starting a new chapter in their life!
