They play lovers, poets, and superheroes on screen. Their voices make our hearts melt; the characters they play make us believe in the promise of true love over and over again. But some celebrities do not just play the hero on screen.

Time and again, celebrity power couples have donned capes and swooped in to save and support those who need it most. So, on World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the couples who believe in the spirit of empathy, of giving back, and knowing that true power lies in kindness.

5 Celebrity Power Couples Known For Their Philanthropic Work

With great power comes great responsibilities. And our favorite celebrity couples tend to take their responsibilities rather seriously. Without further ado, here’s a list of celebrity couples who empty their pockets regularly to help support those in need:

1. Beyonce and Jay-Z

There is a reason we call her our Queen. Stories of their philanthropic endeavors regularly make the news. Beyonce once donated her entire earnings from the movie Cadillac Records, a whopping 4 million dollars, to a treatment center dedicated entirely to helping those struggling with drug abuse and the often intense consequences of it.

Her foundation, BeyGood, stands for everyone in any kind of trouble — from those handling unemployment to serious illnesses. While Beyonce is also a fearsome spokesperson for gender equality, her partner, Jay-Z, too is known to be a humongous supporter of Global Citizen — an organization dedicated to eradicating poverty from its very root. Now, if that’s not a proper use of power, we don’t know what is.

2. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively

Ever free with their hearts and checkbooks, power pair Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively made news again this February for donating a fat sum of $1 million to Food Banks Canada and Feeding America.

The world’s favorite lovers are rather known for opening their checkbooks to help aid fight against world hunger and other atrocities. I think it’s safe to say that superstar Reynolds takes his role as a sassy and severely crush-worthy superhero rather seriously.

3. Tom Holland and Zendaya

Speaking of being superheroes on and off-screen, the Spiderman stars Tom Holland and Zendaya very recently revealed that they’ve been going out. And they are already doing charity work together! Other than delivering millions of dollars worth of toys to children’s hospitals, our real-life friendly neighborhood vigilante and family launched The Brothers Trust – an organization dedicated to using Tom’s popularity to bring to the fore and help charities that get lost in all the noise.

From supporting children with cancer and other life-altering diseases through Momentum to helping feed starving children in Kenya through the Lunchbowl initiative, Tom and fam do it all. And boo Zendaya cannot have enough of it. She has since appeared in the organization’s videos and shown her support on and off-screen.

On her 18th birthday, she donated enough money to Convoy of Hope to feed 150 starving people. She regularly donates to charity on her birthday, fights to end world hunger, urges fans to raise awareness and extend helping hands, and is an all-around amazing queen in general.

4. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham

They’re not just about the fancy footwork and fashionable outings. David and Victoria Beckham have ever been at the forefront when it comes to being loose with their purse for a good cause. Earlier this year, as UNICEF’s global goodwill ambassador, David donated a solid 1 million dollars to the organization. The former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham too is known for being rather involved with UNAIDS and Cancer Research UK’s work.

The couple work to fight cancer, get Help for Heroes and work to Save the Children and, basically, seem determined to rule hearts on and off their glittering stages and football fields.

5. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

You can’t talk about giving back without mentioning Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. The couple, who seem as much in love with the world as they are with each other, started the WJSFF or Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation in 1966. Their motto? To leave the world better because they touched it.

Heartwarming, right? But it’s not just words. Through the years, the WJSFF has donated millions of dollars in an effort to empower those who are left behind. The organization is ever involved in supporting arts and education through its grants and programs. And they have made serious strides in creating a sustainable, eco-solution-based future. So, it’s safe to say that the Hollywood heartthrobs more than deliver on their promise of leaving behind a planet that’s safer, kinder, and better because they touched it.

It’s not easy to win hearts on screen, to leave fans crying, laughing, and pining for more every time. Perhaps it’s even more difficult to be the hero the world needs you to be in real life. Yet when the lights turn off, the special effects guys go off-duty, and the audience looks away, these couples keep at it — saving lives, helping people, and leaving the world better for them having been in it.
